West Virginia University

Private Philanthropy

Over the past several years, state support for higher education has dwindled nationally. At WVU, about 25% of the cost of a college education is supported by state budgets; the remainder is provided by tuition from our students, funding from federal and private organizations for our research, and private charitable support from our alumni and friends.

Despite cuts in state funding, West Virginia University remains a bargain for our students. In 2005, WVU was ranked the 10th least expensive in-state school in the nation, with an annual cost of $4,164 – or $1,470 less than the average $5,634 tuition at other flagship universities. In addition, WVU’s nonresident undergraduate tuition cost of $12,874 is $3,486 less that the median $16,360 for the schools listed in the survey. This puts WVU as the 14th least expensive out-of-state school among the 67 surveyed.

It is important that we keep tuition affordable so that future generations will have access to quality higher education. So, we thank our alumni and friends who provide us with the financial resources to make this possible at WVU.
