Projects for CFC - Technology Transfer
In engineering, we consider technology transfer can be the continual process of transferring knowledge gained through research and development efforts into day‑to‑day applications. To be at its best, technology transfer must result either in improved or new standards of engineering practice and/or a product produced on a mass scale at low cost.
From the Constructed Facilities Center's interdisciplinary composition, CFC participants, including undergraduate and graduate students, must often become "hands‑on" teachers as they assist in the transfer of academic know‑how into usable tools for the purpose of making the quality of life better for the citizens of our country.
Traditionally, universities, especially in science and engineering, transferred technology through the publication of technical journals and presentations at technical conferences and through the quality of the students they graduated. However, new technologies must be relevant and ready to be applied where and when needed, not shelved as glossy reports. Thus, academia must quickly prepare its research and development for practice.
One of the purposes of the Center's technology transfer work is to interact with practicing engineers to develop and teach new courses; to present seminars, short courses, and conferences dealing with our research efforts; to participate in meetings with industry representatives and professional society members; to display exhibits demonstrations at national and regional technical expositions; and to conduct one‑to‑one technical discussions when asked to do so.
To be committed to the transfer of technology is, perhaps, one of our greatest challenges; thus, the center must continue to seek new ways of responding to the needs of the engineering community and of sharing what we learn. The Center has been conducting Bi‑annual conferences on polymer composites and interacting with many state highway agencies and US Federal Highway Administration while transferring the technologies. The Center investigators have been developing design manuals and publishing their technical findings in numerous refereed journals.
