John P. Zaniewski, professor of civil and environmental engineering, was recently named director of the West Virginia Local Technical Assistance Program (WV LTAP). Located in the College's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, WV LTAP provides training and technical assistance on a wide range of topics for highway maintenance and safety workers in the state, and disseminates information on managing transportation infrastructure. Funding for the program is provided by the Federal Highway Administration and the West Virginia Department of Transportation. Zaniewski earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972, 1974 and 1978, respectively. He joined the WVU faculty in 1996. "Our goal at WV LTAP is to foster a safe and efficient transportation system that enhances economic development in West Virginia," said Zaniewski. "I am looking forward to contributing to this important effort, which brings advanced transportation technologies from around the world to those at the local levels in West Virginia." Zaniewski is active in research in the area of advanced materials, with a special interest in asphalt materials, pavement design, pavement management and highway construction. He has published extensively in the areas of pavement design, materials and management systems, including co-authoring two textbooks, Modern Pavement Management and Materials for Civil and Construction Engineering.
