In 1999, she became chief of staff of the Commission for Patents. She recently left that position to do outreach. She did patent examination in the area of biotechnology. Her seminar will help faculty and students in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and business disciplines understand the place of IP in the global economy, current topics in intellectual property, search strategies for STEM research projects, what IP means to the STEM practitioner, and why it is important to future engineers, entrepreneurs, and business leaders. Fleisher will demonstrate how to access available information on the Patent and Trademark Office public web-site by providing a live demonstration of patent searching. Some of the demonstrations will use past senior design projects as a basis for the search while others will employ student suggestions to practice the search. Each of the demonstrations will illustrate how to navigate through the web site to discover prior art patents and non-patent literature using available, publicly disclosed (published) patent applications and prior published patents.
