Gopalakrishnan Named Energy Efficiency Research Fellow by NRCCE

Bhaskaran "Gopala" Gopalakrishnan, professor of industrial and management systems engineering, has been named an Energy Efficiency Research Fellow by WVU’s National Research Center for Coal and Energy (NRCCE).

Gopalakrishnan will also serve as co-director of Industries of the Future – West Virginia, an NRCCE program.

The fellowship program was created to help grow research programs that support industrial energy efficiency, said Carl Irwin, IOF-WV director, by tapping expertise across WVU and at other industrial and academic organizations.

"In naming our first Fellow," said Irwin, "we looked for an expert who could draw on faculty resources to enhance the competitiveness of West Virginia manufacturers by creating strategies and technologies around energy efficiency. We are delighted to have someone of Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s stature and industrial experience joining us."

"I am excited to accept this position with IOF-WV," said Gopalakrishnan. "I plan to focus on research that will facilitate energy efficiency, leading to environmental benefits for industries in West Virginia and the surrounding region."

Gopalakrishnan has more than a decade of experience with the Industrial Assessment Center, located in the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering, which he directs. The IAC helps small and medium manufacturers find ways to save energy, reduce waste and increase productivity.

He is also a Qualified Specialist in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Save Energy Now program. He has conducted energy assessments for large manufacturing facilities such as those of Chrysler, General Motors, Kraft Foods, Hormel Foods, Quad/Graphics and Saint Gobain.

Gopalakrishnan has published 30 peer-reviewed articles focused on energy efficiency and manufacturing productivity improvement. He has also published one book, three book chapters and 45 conference papers.
