Adjeroh Authors Book on Search and Compression Tool

Donald Adjeroh, associate professor in the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, has authored a book entitled, The Burrows-Wheeler Transform: Data Compression, Suffix Arrays, and Pattern Matching.

Published by Springer, the book was co-authored by Tim Bell, professor at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and Amar Mukherjee, professor at the University of Central Florida.

The book is a comprehensive resource for information related to various aspects of the Burrows-Wheeler Transform, an algorithm that is used to convert data into a format that is well suited for compression and searching, two important topics in database management and information retrieval.

It also explores non-traditional applications of the Burrows-Wheeler Transform and provides tutorial materials that are ideal for classroom use.

"This is a much-needed book providing the first complete coverage of the principles and applications of a fascinating tool," said Giovanni Manzini, Università del Piemonte Orientale, Italy. "The exposition is rigorous but still easy to follow."

The book will serve as a reference for seasoned professionals or researchers in the area. In addition, it is accessible for senior undergraduate students or beginning graduate students embarking upon research in compression, pattern matching, full text retrieval, compressed index structures or other areas related to the BWT.

"A thorough discussion of the Burrows-Wheeler Transform and its many connections to pattern-matching and data compression is long overdue. This fascinating comprehensive monograph fills a gap," said Bill Smyth, professor at McMaster University, Canada.

The book is available at Amazon.com or from Springer at www.springer.com/computer/database+management+%26+information+retrieval/book/978-0-387-78908-8".
