Tau Beta Pi to Collect Used Bikes

Christmas may be a couple of months away, but engineering students at WVU are already planning a way to help area children have a happy holiday season.

Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honorary, is hosting its Fall Bicycle Drive October 13th through October 17th. Bikes for children or adults that are in repairable condition will be accepted, then repaired and donated to area residents in need.

Bikes may be dropped off at any time during the drive at the Area 41 parking lot behind the Engineering Sciences Building on the Evansdale Campus. Signs will be posted to direct donors to the drop-off location.

The engineering students are co-sponsoring the drive with Positive Spin, a local nonprofit organization that encourages alternative transportation and serves as a bicycle-recycling center.

"Thanks to this program, children whose families couldnÃ¢??t afford bikes are now able to get them," said Cassie Cunningham, vice president of Tau Beta Pi. "We are happy to be able to make a difference in the community and in childrenÃ¢??s lives."

Positive Spin also will accept bicycle donations at its headquarters in Grand Central Station from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the bike drive. To get to Positive Spin, from Monongahela Boulevard and Sixth Avenue (traffic light at Seneca Center), turn up Sixth Avenue and follow it until the street ends. Turn left around the Grand Central Station sign on the building and stop at the second door on the right.
