The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) recently awarded Cassie Cunningham, a senior chemical engineering major, the Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer National Scholarship. This marks the third time a West Virginia University student has won this award in the past four years. The Donald F. and Mildred Topp Othmer National Scholarship is awarded each year to 15 deserving members of AIChE from around the nation. Recipients are selected based on their academic achievements as well as involvement in their local chapter. Cunningham is from Middlebourne, West Virginia. She is active with several student organizations in a leadership capacity, including serving as president of AIChE, vice president of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honorary, and treasurer of the Society of Women Engineers. She also serves as chief engineer for her class's Capstone Design Project, which deals with the application of nanotechnology to a biological process. "We are very proud of Cassie," said Dady Dadyburjor, professor and chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering. "This is an award on the basis of academics, activities in the Student Chapter, and future plans." Upon receiving her undergraduate degree, Cunningham will be moving to Freeport, Texas, where she has accepted a job with Dow Chemical.
