Alternative Energy Expert to Speak in Chemical Engineering's Dow Seminar

Donald Anthony

An executive with a leading alternative energy company will speak at WVU on Friday, Oct. 31, about the commercialization of a technology to convert coal or petroleum coke into pipeline-quality synthetic natural gas.

Donald B. Anthony is the chief technology officer for Great Point Energy, the leading developer of catalytic gasification technology to convert coal, petroleum coke and biomass into natural gas while allowing the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide. Utilizing its proprietary conversion and carbon capture technology, GreatPoint Energy produces ultra-clean natural gas from widely abundant domestic sources.

Anthony is speaking as part of the Department of Chemical Engineering's Dow/Union Carbide Reaction Engineering and Catalysis Seminar Honoring R. Richard Bannister.

The seminar will take place at 9 a.m. in Assembly Room A of the National Research Center for Coal and Energy (NRCCE). A reception will take place in the NRCCE lobby after the lecture.

Anthony is responsible for technology strategy, engineering, research, technical project development, operations and licensing for Great Point Energy. He has been a director, advisor and consultant to the company since 2005.

Prior to joining Great Point Energy, he served as president and executive director of the Council for Chemical Research. Prior to that, he was president and CEO of NineSigma, Inc., president of Bailey Controls and ABB Process Automation, and vice president of technology for Bechtel Petroleum and Chemicals, as well as vice president of research and development for BP America and Standard Oil of Ohio.

Dr. Anthony earned his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Toledo. He went on to complete both his master's and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Dr. Anthony is a member of the University of Chicago Review Committee for the Argonne National Library and as a past member of the National Research Council's Energy Engineering Board. He served as chairman of the board of the Glennan Microsystems Initiative and as an executive member of the Northeast Ohio Regional Technology Coalition. He is also a past member of the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering Visiting Committee.

This Dow/Union Carbide Reaction Engineering and Catalysis Seminar Series was established in 1994 to honor R. Richard Bannister and his association with the Department of Chemical Engineering at West Virginia University.
