Raytheon Executive to Speak to Students



An executive from Raytheon, a leading defense and aerospace systems supplier, will speak at WVU on Monday, March 30, in a presentation about career opportunities in technology areas, particularly for women and minorities.

Valecia D. Maclin is the director of homeland security and secure systems for the Raytheon Information Solutions Business of the Raytheon Company, where she oversees more than 200 employees who deliver solutions to federal agencies charged with securing our nation's borders. She is also the site executive for the Raytheon facility in Riverdale, Maryland.

The lecture will take place at 5 p.m., Monday, March 30, in Room 401 of the Engineering Sciences Building. It is being sponsored by sponsored by the WVU student chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers.

Raytheon is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world.

Prior to assuming her current position, Maclin was the program manager for the Systems Development and Integration Program with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where she led a team in the development, maintenance, and modernization of patent and trademark information systems. She also served as the systems engineering director on the Department of Homeland Security United States Visitor and Immigration Status Indicator Technology Program, and as program manager and systems engineering director for mission critical programs with NASA.

Ms. Maclin has received numerous industry awards and recognition, including a 2008 Black Engineer of the Year Award for Professional Achievement from US Black Engineer and Information Technology Magazine, and co-authored an Air Force Academy textbook on project management.

Ms. Maclin holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and material science from Duke University; as well as a master's degree in the management of technology from the University of Pennsylvania via a joint program with the Wharton School of Business.

An active community leader, Valecia coordinates the efforts of metropolitan Washington, D.C., churches in humanitarian efforts to Africa, as well as providing support to the needs of the homeless in her local area. She has been an instructor of computer science and management courses to working professionals and is actively involved in math tutoring for middle school students.
