Civil Engineering Grad Running for Mayor of Omaha



Jim Suttle, member of WVU Academy of Civil Engineers, is running for mayor of Omaha, Nebraska.
Jim Suttle won't be able to make it to this year's meeting of the WVU Academy of Civil Engineers; he's too busy running for mayor of Omaha, Nebraska.

Suttle, a graduate of WVU with bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering, is former vice chairman of the Board of Directors for the Omaha-based engineering and design firm HDR, the nation's 17th largest architecture - engineering firm. The company has over 8,000 employees in 140 offices throughout the United States.

Jim's responsibilities at HDR included leadership in expanding opportunities and managing programs for all the engineering and architecture business groups within the firm, in both domestic and worldwide markets. He was also responsible for the corporate safety program, international corporate communications and national governmental affairs.

Jim is the former Public Works Director for the City of Omaha. He once held transportation planning positions with local governments in Albuquerque and Wichita.

Jim is a licensed professional engineer in Nebraska and has served as a member and chairman of the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects.

He has been active and served in leadership roles with the American Consulting Engineers Council, the Design Professionals Coalition and the Design Build Institute of America.

Jim Suttle has a record of serving the Omaha community through membership on the boards of the Methodist Hospital, Omaha Symphony and Salvation Army. He is past president of the Omaha Downtown Rotary Club. In addition, Jim is currently a member of the Urban League of Nebraska, the Western Douglas County Chamber of Commerce, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, North Omaha Commercial Club, Benson-Ames Alliance and the Benson Neighborhood Association.

In 2005, voters in District One elected Jim to the Omaha City Council. As a Councilman, he serves as a member of the Omaha-Douglas Public Building Commission. In May of 2008, Jim was elected President of the Metro Area Planning Agency Council of Officials.

Jim and his wife, Deb, have two adult daughters, along with three grandchildren. Deb Suttle is a former Nebraska State Senator, former member of the Omaha Library Board, and current member of the Library Foundation Board.
