A message from the dean Gene Cilento
 |
| Gene Cilento is the Glen Hiner Dean of the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University. | As the baby boomer generation begins to retire, America needs new talent to stay competitive in an increasingly global workplace, and the College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University has been growing in response to this need. Students from all over the nation have heard about the great education we provide and are choosing WVU.
In the past several years, attracted by our strong commitment to innovation in teaching and research, our student body has grown by more than 60 percent to nearly 3,000 students. Faculty members in a diverse range of high-tech disciplines have joined our faculty.
With nearly $27 million annually in externally funded research, our faculty and students are engaged in cutting-edge research in advanced materials, energy, nanotechnology, information technology, and other disciplines.
We are recognized for the high quality of our academic programs and particularly for our outstanding freshman year experience, career assistance, undergraduate research experiences, and senior design projects. Students at all levels gain priceless experience by working directly with faculty and industry on real-world projects.
Graduates from our bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs are widely sought and assume leadership positions in business, industry, and academia; or gain admission to some of our nation’s top graduate schools.
We have put a major effort into upgrading our teaching and research facilities, laboratories, and equipment. Recent renovations include the Alfred Galli Laboratory Complex in Chemical Engineering, the Bernard Judy Laboratory Wing in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, a state-of-the-art Nano/Microengineering Cleanroom Facility, environmental and structural labs for Civil Engineering.
In addition, we are currently building a four-story addition to our main Engineering Sciences Building. This facility will provide additional lab space, a new theater-style classroom, and a learning center for students. Our College is definitely on the move!
